Jávea: a privileged place on the Spanish coast
White sand and carved rocky beaches, cliffs, coves, islands… There are few spots on the peninsula with Javea's variety of coastline, complete with a charming seaside port. The Castle of Santa Bárbara, perched on top of the Benacantil Mountain, overlooks the endless white beaches and long promenades. Javea’s culture, architecture, language, and people have been shaped by the Phoenician, Greek, Roman and Arab traders and conquerors that left their mark at this crossroads of trading routes over the centuries.
Students live in a typical quaint residence in the historical Centre. Jávea still conserves its Medieval Layout, a unique network of narrow streets with scattered white façades, arched doorways, and Gothic windows and ironworks. You will be Strolling amidst these streets and shops will give you a glimpse into past centuries.
Jávea (or Xabia) is also surrounded by Montgó Natural Park and Monte Público de la Granadella Reserve making Jávea one of the Costa Blanca's greenest zones.
2nd July - 14th July
Two weeks having fun while speaking Spanish
Chit Chat Spanish is a personalized, “boutique” Spanish language immersion program developed in 1994 through a collaboration between our company and Deerfield Academy, one of the top rated boarding schools in the U.S.A. Since its inception we have opened and expanded the program, inviting students from all over the world.
At Chit Chat we know that young people want to enjoy themselves in the summer after long months of hard study. Through the years we have witnessed and recorded very clear evidence that their linguistic progress is much more substantial when their summer language experience includes classes and activities that are engaging and dynamic.
Facilities and Schedule
The Chit Chat Spanish program is based in the historic center of Jávea, in a renovated Youth Hostel which exclusively hosts Chit Chat students. It is a totally refurbished and very luminous building that mixes modern and functional elements with traditional details of Valencian architecture. It includes a large main hall, two patios, classrooms and bedrooms with modern and spacious private bathrooms.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner and traditional snacks are all provided at the residence.
Mornings, after breakfast with the monitors, students receive Spanish classes in small groups in the classrooms or on the terrace.
Lunch is served in the dining room with the monitors, who will encourage relaxed Spanish conversation at all times. A catering company serves us a very varied menu each day. It is possible to order special menus for vegetarians, celiacs or food intolerances.
Afternoons programs will alternate between sports and cultural visits and activities.
Back at the center, at 7:30 p.m., there is time to take a shower or rest for a while before dinner and the evening’s activities.
Dinner After dinner students choose between relaxing and watching a Spanish movie, or participating in games, quizzes, or even singing along to Spanish karaoke.
Morning classes are divided into two sessions.
The first session provides the student with the functional phrases and vocabulary they'll use on the streets of Jávea, in cafes, shops museums and chatting with our Spanish teens.
After a short break, the second session, "Enjoy Spanish" permits students to continue to learn and practice Spanish through theater, role play, film making, workshops and group projects chosen by students. Teens will engage in topics based on their interests including science, music, ecology, sports, cinema, video games, art, etc. They will also receive visits from leading native professionals living in the area, who share interesting facts about their work, art or hobbies and encourage students to ask questions and participate.
Teachers and Monitors
Our teachers and monitors are native Spanish speakers with plenty of experience teaching Spanish to young people. As well as including reading and writing, our method focuses on improving communication skills through entertaining but organized activities specifically designed to facilitate and encourage the student to speak Spanish with confidence.
Our monitors will lead games and afternoon activities in the residence, the beach or in the sports center. Together with the director, monitors are also housed in the residence, and can attend the students at any time of day or night.
Sports include kayaking, biking and swimming
Kayaking is a great way to explore the seaside. Chit Chat students can paddle along beneath the impressive cliffs, explore sea caves and find secret deserted beaches on a three hour trip led by expert guides visiting the cave at Llop Marí and the Caló cove on the Jávea coast.
Another way to get to know Jávea and its surroundings is by bike. Chit Chat students, along with their monitors, can enjoy a leisurely stroll around the harbor or beach, as well as the country lanes that lead to the some of the best viewpoints in the area such as those to be found at Arenal, Séquia de la Noria or Cala Blanca.
We also organize Volleyball and Snorkelling on the beach, to have a fun afternoon playing, diving or just sunbathing.
At our facilities in uptown Jàvea, the students can swim in the pool or play tennis. There the monitors will organize games with Spanish boys and girls of the same age with whom they will able to relax and speak Spanish. The pool is constantly supervised by a bilingual lifeguard at all times.
The students can also play Soccer and Basketball at the indoor Sports Centers in Jàvea, always in the company of their monitors.
Experience and engage with Spanish Culture
Other afternoons are designated to soaking up Spanish culture in and around Javea. Students may choose between various activities which include, but are not limited to:
Flamenco dance classes, Spanish cooking workshops, one on one conversations with your "Spanish conversation partner" and visits to museums and other points of interest.
We also have access to a program of Spanish cinema in the port of Jávea. The monitors select a Spanish film that suits the level of the students and prepare students with an exercise that allows them to better understand the story and enjoy the film, with a brief discussion afterwards.
At night, after dinner, the streets of Jávea are filled with people enjoying ice cream or a refreshment on the terraces of the promenade. It is the best time for the students, accompanied by their monitors, to practice their social Spanish with Spanish teens of the same age who attend our English courses in Jávea.
Exploring the region through select excursions
Valencia is the third largest city in Spain. Situated on the banks of the Turia, its historic center is one of the largest in Spain. This heritage of ancient monuments, views and cultural attractions makes Valencia one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Valencia is known internationally for the Fallas (Las Fallas), a local festival held in March, which was declared intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias,is a modern architectural, cultural and entertainment complex in Valencia designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava and is considered one of the most important and spectacular modern art constructions in the world. Chit Chat students will visit the complex and will visit two of its main attractions: L'Oceanogràfic and the Science Museum.
The building of L'Oceanogràfic has a cover with the shape of a water lilly and houses the largest aquarium in Europe in which all the main marine ecosystems of the planet are represented. The building of the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum is shaped like the skeleton of a dinosaur, and there students will enjoy the interactive exhibits highlighting important recent discoveries in science, technology and the environment
"Chit chat´s director, Leslie Freschet and I, developed a personalized, cutting-edge Spanish immersion program designed to advance student´s Spanish considerably by providing stimulating classes, activities and experiences that allowed them to experience the magic of Spain"
Steve Taft - Deerfield Academy-
"I was looking at camps in Spain that didn´t have classes, because I wanted to make sure I had time to get out and see other things, but it turned out the classes were fun and helped me interact better in the streets and stores and talking to people. "
Kirsten, 17 , student from Greenwich Academy-
" I thought it was a good balance between classes and outdoor activities because I really like sports and there was kayaking and basketball and other sports and fun things to do. I tried snorkeling for the first time. Yes I would definitley recomend this program. It was fun "
